I know that my 8 pound Pomeranian dog ate some chocolate while I was out. I’m not sure how much but he’s had some diarrhea and he’s vomited twice quite a bit. I’m curious if I should make him vomit any more with hydrogen peroxide or monitor his symptoms

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the Pomeranian will be able to digest that. What is the Pomeranian's name?

Niemi

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Niemi?

He’s a very healthy dog and has had no issues prior

Hi, I'm Dr. Peter. Welcome to JustAnswer. I'm reviewing your question now and will post back with your reply ASAP.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

1- How many ounces of chocolate did he eat?

2- Type of chocolate (milk, dark, etc.)?

3- Did you see chocolate in the vomit?

4- Any other symptoms besides vomiting and diarrhea?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
I do not know how much he’s eaten. It was a milk chocolate bunny from Easter. The vomit is orange/brown in color and had some chocolate in it. He usually hides under the bed for security but right now he wants to be left alone. I haven’t noticed any other odd symptoms

1- How many hours has it been since he ate?

2- Is he lethargic?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
He ate dinner around 7, and he doesn’t seem any more lethargic than normal at this hour

Friend, we may be in different time zones to giving me time won't help me. How many hours since he ate it?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
I’m not sure when he ate the chocolate, that’s the problem. He ate dinner about five hours ago, and my husband was here six hours ago. It had to have been between three to four hours since he’s eaten this chocolate and I came home
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
My husband is no longer here and is not being helpful so I really wish I could give you more information there

Please give me 5-10 minutes to type your answer. No need to accept the phone call request. Thank you.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

In response to your question, if he is already vomiting no need to give peroxide. I would recommend you observe him. Symptoms that would require an ER vet visit are hyperactivity or profound lethargy, tremors, excessive panting or difficulty breathing, etc. This is what you can do:

1- Do not give things like Pepto Bismol or Imodium. Start him on Pepcid AC (famotidine) 10mg 1/4 tablet every 12 hours for 1-2 days. You can buy Pepcid AC over the counter in any pharmacy.

2- No food or water for 6-8 hours. Need to give his gastrointestinal tract time to rest.

3- After 6-8 hours offer a small amount of water. Wait half hour, if no vomiting, offer a small amount of rice (50%) and boiled boneless chicken or ground beef (50%) 4-6 times a day. Keep on this diet for several days then wean into regular diet.

4- If he continues to vomit after doing the above he will need to be seen by your family veterinarian for a hands on examination.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service - I hope I've provided the information you were seeking, if you feel you have received anything less, please reply back as I am happy to address follow-up questions. Kindly rate me when you are done.

He's doing well. He wasn't sick again but your suggestions were helpful and after taking Pepcid and the diet you suggested, he was back to normal quickly. We had a family meeting about leaving that Easter candy around...grr.Thanks again for easing my mind and helping us!Best,
Brittani
