My dog had puppies...

My dog had puppies about a week ago. 9 pups...I see her feeding them when I hear whelping, but she doesn't seem to want to be in the whelping box at any other time. THe pups sleep 90% of the time, and they don't cry constantly, thus I assume they're eating properly...I'm just worried about the bonding

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help your puppy. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about your puppy?

My dog is skin and bones....She doesn't seem to want to touch her kibble...I mixed in a little tuna tonight and she ate a bowlful of puppy kibble

Thank you.

Your dog needs to be fed puppy food all the time for now......with her nursing she is using all her calories up.....her general condition is probably why she is not staying in the whelping box more...you need to feed her several meals a day of good quality puppy food. canned and dry.....

She's free fed puppy food, however she doesn't want to touch it.

Gotcha.....then you need to get her to a vet because she is sick...

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

She should be ravenous....

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

If she has no appetite then you have a problem.....

How much time should she be spending with her puppies when she's not feeding? Until I can take her tomorrow, should I lock her in with the pups?
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
What's normal? what should concern me?

As long as puppies are gaining weight which you should be monitoring and not crying then they are probably ok but you should take them with her to vet tomorrow...no do not lock her in there.....that would be cruel....your dog is sick....

OK....1 last thing, we brought her in about 2 weeks before the birth. Vet said she was skinny but didn't notice any problems....Her energy seems high enough to not indicate any pressing sickness...i.e. running outside, took her for a 5 minute walk....could there be any other possible reason for the lack of appetite minus the sickness

no, dogs that have given birth eat like crazy...if she is not eating something is wrong!
