Our dog Charlie had a swollen muzzle and vomiting this

Customer Question
Our dog Charlie had...

Our dog Charlie had a swollen muzzle and vomiting this morning. We gave him 2 Benadryl and he ended up at the vet all day. He came home and was fine. Now he has hives all over his body and his ears are swollen and red.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did Charlie eat anything unusual?

We just gave him 2 more benadryl about 10 mins ago.

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Charlie?

His ears are hit to the touch.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Charlie?

He is 10 months old.

I'm sorry to hear of this with Charlie. Do you happen to have a glucocorticoid (steroid) such as prednisone at home? Such a drug will be more effective than an antihistamine at this time as you're currently seeing that histamine has already been released causing the urticarial reaction - hives and pinnal (ear flaps) swelling.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
No, I do not have a steroid.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

I understand. Unless another vet visit is possible, the tincture of time plus Benadryl dosed at 2 mg per pound of body weight (maximum of 50 mg at any one time) repeated at 8 hour intervals should eventually normalize Charlie. Most dogs will normalize within 36 hours of the onset of signs. Expect considerable sedation. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

What if he is not better in 36 hours?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Charlie's vet will want to inject prednisolone or dexamethasone intravenously and send home an oral form of one of those steroids to be given until he normalizes.
