My ten week old puppy is walking like he’s drunk and sometimes he can’t stand up. He’s not crying or seeming to be in any pain. After a few minutes he’s fine and resumes playing and even jumping. What could be causing this??

Hello, I would be concerned he may not be eating frequently enough or could have sustained an injury or could even have a spinal problem. Do you feed several small frequent meals? Has he sustained any injuries or falls recently? Do you know if the other puppies in his litter are healthy? When was his last vet visit?

He gets fed 3/4 times a day and he has quite an appetite. No injuries or falls to my knowledge. The problem only began yesterday evening. He went to the vet last week for shots and a check-up. She had no concerns. I had all of his litter mates until 8 weeks old and have seen them often since and they are all very healthy.

If he is eating 3 or 4 times a day hypoglycemia is unlikely, but a quick blood glucose would tell you if this is the cause. Otherwise other rule outs would be trauma or wobblers. X-ray sounds like it is indicated in his case.

Other really really weird genetic diseases could also be ruled out if none of the above are found but are unlikely. I would make sure he is not running a fever (over 102.5 rectally) and have him checked up again along with x-rays taken.

Finally, an anemia could cause weakness if there are parasites or a problem with his red cells- a CBC could help rule that in.
