my daughter not home, right now. Her nose looks like it has ulcers inside nostril. I gave her a bath and now i have rash on my neck. So im assuming what ever she has is contagious
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 22 days ago

You can return to our conversation at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return. If the round circular spot on top of Buttercup's nose represents ringworm (fungus/dermatophyte infection), yes, it's contagious to you. Ulcers inside the nostril, however, can represent bacterial infection or autoimmune skin disease such as discoid lupus erythematosus or the pemphigus complex. I'll need to see what you're seeing to be most accurate for you.

The crustiness represents nasal hyperkeratosis. Here's more on that:

This is an idiopathic (unknown cause) condition characterized by the excessive formation of nasal keratin. Keratin is a structural protein of skin. Thickened, hard, dry keratin accumulates on the nasal planum - mostly on the dorsum of the nose. Secondary erosions, ulcers and fissures may be present and represent an autoimmune skin disease (the immune system is attacking my patient’s own tissues). Autoimmune skin diseases are confirmed only by biopsy.

The intensity of therapy depends on the severity of the lesions. The nasolacrimal ducts should be flushed because blockage of those ducts may present a contributing factor. For mild, asymptomatic cases, affected areas should be hydrated with a warm water soak. A softening agent, then, should be applied every 24 hours until excessive keratin has been removed (~7-10 days). Treatment should be continued on an as-needed basis for control. Effective softening agents include the following: petroleum jelly, A&D ointment, ichthammol ointment, salicylic acid/sodium lactate/urea gel, and tretinoin gel. (The last three are available from Buttercup's vet.) For fissured lesions, combination antibiotic/glucocorticoid ointment (Panalog, e.g.) may be applied to lesions every 8-12 hours until healed. Horny growths should be trimmed away before hydration and softening therapy are begun. The prognosis is good. Although it's incurable, this is a cosmetic disease that usually can be managed symptomatically.

Regretfully, I can't see into his nostrils due to shadowing in the pics. The circular spot on top of his nose is out of focus and so I can't assess it as well as I'd like to but considering that there's hyperkeratosis, ulceration inside the nostrils and there's now erythema (redness) on his snout, there's a good chance that all of these changes are due to autoimmune skin disease. Buttercup's vet will want to examine these areas hands-on and is likely to recommend biopsying representative areas. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

Can you give rx for panalog?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 22 days ago

No, autoimmune describes my patient's immune system attacking my patient's own tissues.

Regretfully, no, we're not allowed to prescribe through this venue. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

I forgot she keeps sneezing too
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 22 days ago

Thank you. Those changes just inside her nostrils are likely to be responsible for her sneezing. I don't expect to find changes that aren't visible with the naked eye; in other words, I don't believe that scoping her nose under sedation will be needed.
