Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm sorry to hear that Iggy has been eating grass and coughing. How long has that been going on, and what kind of dog is he? When was the last time he ate a normal amount of food?

Yorkie, Ate some food tonight. Been like this for the last 2-3 hours.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Some common causes of coughing in small breed dogs include collapsing trachea and congestive heart failure. Small dogs can have weak cartilage in their windpipes, which causes the airway to be sucked inward during breathing, which causes the cough. Small dogs are also at risk for developing mitral valve disease that causes congestive heart failure, which also causes coughing. I would get him to the vet for some chest x-rays to figure out what might be going on. Other causes of coughing in dogs include asthma, pneumonia, laryngeal paraylsis, fungal disease, and lung cancer, to name some. I recommend getting him to the vet for an exam and chest x-rays to start with.

He's not a miniature yorkie. He ways about 10kg. It's only started in last 2-3 hours. Still energetic and running outside. Drinking water, trying to cough up whatever is bugging him. Checked his throat, nothing there. I can't feel anything. Got grass stuck on outside of his mouth.

Is there anything I can give him till morning to help? Till I can get him to a vet.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Yes, you can give him some Robitussin from the pharmacy. Get one with a dosing syringe and give him about a teaspoon/1 ml.

Anything more natural as I'm not even sure if you get Robitussin in South Africa. Is it a cough syrup?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Yes, it's a cough syrup. If they don't have the brand Robitussin, look for a product with the active ingredient guaifenisin.
