Customer Question
She had a heartworm...

She had a heartworm test yesterday and the vet said she was an extremely weak positive. He wants to retest her in a month.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. There are all sorts of infestations the dog can pick up. I'll have you talk to the Veterinarian who'll sort out what is wrong and help you decide what to do about it. What is the dog's name and age?

Sammi and she is about 10 months. We got her from the pound

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Sammi?

No. My question is why if she tested a weak positive would we not start some kind of treatment now. Why wait for it to get worse

I'm sorry Sammi is having this issue. I would tend to agree with you though that if she's positive I'd start treatment right away. That being said, I doubt a significant amount of change would occur in one month.

Did your vet look for microfilaria (baby worms) under the microscope? If not that's an easy verification. Just put a drop of blood on a slide and put a cover slip on. When looking through a microscope a heartworm positive dog usually will have little worms wiggling around.

If your vet is not comfortable doing that, then I'd suggest verifying the result by sending a blood sample to the lab vs doing a repeat in-house test.

I hope Sammi is really negative! But even if she's positive, it is treatable.

Let me know if that answers your question and if I can help in any other way! Kindly consider rating my answer 5 stars; you can always get back to me with questions and updates after rating.
