Customer Question
My 2 year old...

My 2 year old maltese has been very socialized, loves everyone and most dogs. In the last month, she has been increasingly fearful on walks(which she loved). At night in our home, she seems fearful at times of shadows, noises that she seemed unaware of before. It is a drastic change in her behavior. I just took her out to walk as she wanted, but she went a short distance and frantically pulled me home. I am concerned her eyesite

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm sorry to hear that your dog has suddenly started being fearful of something. Sometimes this is caused by a decrease in vision or hearing. I would not expect either of those at her age, but there are certain eye conditions that can develop in young dogs.

It would be good to have her eyes examined by your vet. If there is no issue with her eyesight, I would do a trial of anti-anxiety medication and training her to be calm during walks using training treats.

Thank you, ***** ***** it may be her eye site. Ugh.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 2 months ago

Hopefully it's not. She might have had some sort of experience that she perceived to be traumatic and just needs some training to get back to her old self.

Given her age, there is a good chance of that, but we want to make certain it's not her eyes.
