My cavachon is almost four years old. When he was a puppy he had a lot of digestive issues. I went to numerous vets and tried every test. After months of reoccurring problems I switched him to a limited ingredient food and he has been great for three years. Then last week out of no where he started with vomiting and diarrrhea. Very watery diarrhea with flecks of bright red blood. After another Around

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the puppy eat anything unusual?

Round of blood tests and X-rays which were unremarkable he was doing well on the antiboditc. Again today he stated with the really watery diarrhea.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Sammy

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Sammy?

He also regurgitated his food this am. Earlier this week I slowly switched him back to his regular food from the canned zd his vet prescribed. I’m just looking for some ideas because no one has a clue. His most recent. Look test was unremarkable except for an elevated pancreas enzymes.

Hello I am Dr. Joey. Thanks for asking your question and trusting me to help you and your pet today. I am a licensed veterinarian with over 18 years of experience. I am sorry to hear Sammy is experiencing this.

There are several possible causes for this. With elevated pancreas enzymes I must assume the specific pancreatitis test (cPL) which can be done in-house was negative and pancreatitis was ruled out. If not, then this is important because it keeps pancreatitis as a possibility on the list. And, if this was the diagnosis then an ultrasound of his pancreas would be useful to know if he has anything other than inflammation like a tumor or abscess.

Assuming pancreatitis was ruled out then certainly diet could be a possible cause. He could have ingested something that started this and now we have to normalize his system. A probiotic in addition to antibiotic (Tylan or metronidazole/Flagyl) can be useful. Alternatively, there could be something primarily going on with his digestive tract such as an infiltrative problem like inflammatory bowel disease, or this could be an atypical intestinal parasite like Giardia which requires special screening.

The z/d is probably a reasonable choice at this point.
