Hi, this is Dr. Thompson. I’ve been a small animal veterinarian since 2000. Thanks for your question. I understand you're concerned because your boyfriend's dog Jack is acting unusual. Is that correct?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
That is correct
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Mainly concerned that he isn't drinking water
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Thompson, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

OK, trembling and clingy-- could indicate pain or just feeling really lousy in general. Does Jack have any history of medical problems?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Thompson, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Sorry, you didn't say trembling, you said panting. Same thing goes, though.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
No prior medical problems that I'm aware of. He also feels warm.

Did he eat today? Any vomiting, diarrhea, coughing or sneezing?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
He's eating just not drinking. No vomiting or diarrhea
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Thompson, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Eating but not drinking is a little unusual. Have you checked in his mouth to see if there is any inflammation or foreign objects there?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I did. Nothing looks out of the ordinary. He's not in any pain from what i can tell
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Thompson, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Has Jack ever had a seizure?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Not that I'm aware of
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
He is adopted so medical history is a little unknown
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Thompson, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

The panting and clingy behavior along with not drinking could be a sign of anxiety, pain or even "post-ictal" (after a seizure) behavior.

The concern about him not drinking is valid, but if he's eating, it's not quite as worrisome. If you'd like to cover your bases, you can feed him moist food to get some water into him. Watch him closely tonight for abnormal movement, limping, etc. See if he is able to lie down and rest normally. Also look around and see if anything could have spooked him. I've known dogs who were at home when the smoke alarm battery started beeping and they were anxious for hours afterward.

If he is still acting strangely tomorrow, I would take him to a vet for a physical exam and possibly a blood panel.

Hi-- Just checking in with you on Jack. How is he doing today?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
He seems pretty much back to normal. Eating and drinking. Maybe he ate something in the yard or just wasn't feeling good. Not sure, but thank you for checking in

So glad to hear that! Thanks for the update :)
