How serious is potassium...

How serious is potassium bromide toxicity? My dog takes 500 mg per day and I changed his diet to homemade food and we are waiting on blood results but his vet thinks he's suffering toxicity due to the decrease in sodium. He is twitching and is slow in the back end.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is your dog's name and age?

Scotty and has 11.5 years old. Been on Potassium Bromide since 5.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Scotty?

He has 40% of his bladder removed on 1/25 due to TCC but he has healed well and has no signs of cancer. I don't know if I should go back to his kibble. I won't get blood results until tomorrow and I'm freaking out.

Hi

Dr. Paul Brazzell here

Does he seem wobbly, incoordinated?

Have they run serum bromide levels to confirm elevated levels?

Paul

They just ran the blood work an hour or so ago and I will have results tomorrow. The main thing I noticed is twitching/muscle spasms and he's slow to get up in the back end which I thought was his back but I read that could be from bromide toxicity.
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
If I need to start him back in kibble from the homemade diet I will but I just want to reverse this as I'm concerned it could do damage. I wasn't aware changing his diet could do this.

I would be looking for ataxia with the KBR not so much the twitching

Diet should not impact KBR levels-> Who told you this?

Paul

Customer reply replied 23 days ago
His vet said if his diet lowers in sodium it could throw off his bromide levels, which is why we decided to run the blood work.

I disagree

Nothing in literature that I am aware of

My wife (double board certified veterinary pathologist) agrees

What exactly is ataxia?

Wobbly while walking-> drunk like

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
No he's not wobbly unless he's standing up which he is a little in the back end. He does have cruciate ligament disease and periodic back issues so I didn't think much about it.
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
What else would cause a dog twitching or muscle spasms?

Okay

Did they check calcium levels?

Is he painful?

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
He showed signs of pain when they checked his back. They checked all other levels via bloodwork. Just liver came back slightly elevated.

Okay

That is good news

I would consider thyroid function, muscle inflammation or possible kidney problems at this point

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
All that came back fine. He's just not himself and has the twitching. Something is off.

I dont disagree

But dont forget he had cancer and a major operation

I would be looking to ultrasound the bladder and caudal abdomen to make sure everything is okay there

Update me on the KBR levels when you get them

Paul

They did an ultrasound today it was good.

Good news

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
Yeah. Just the unknown of what is going on right now.

Agreed

Lets see what the KBR levels are

I suspect they will be fine

Dont think we are dealing with KBR toxicity

We can revise plan once we have that

You can rate me now - I will leave this link open for you to update me

And to confirm they did run a thyroid test? And checked the urine?

Paul
