the first few bouts we were feeding her badly but not recently

ok thank you.....yes I would recommend that you put your dog on viokase enzymes on the food.....I would also have a cobalamin/folate blood test done as well...

hypo treats now
hills

Your vet can give you a prescription for the viokase......don't use any treats as those can also be a problem....

ok thanks
any other ideas to keep it from reoccurring?

use the low fat ID as treats.....the next bout of pancreatitis could kill your dog...nothing by mouth except low fat ID period ever......this is very important...

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Feeding only low fat ID is best way to prevent attacks...

can or kibble?

either and or both is fine...that does not matter...

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

you can make little meat balls for treats...

Can I answer any other questions?

ok, thanks
she's at vet for second night, ultra sound was good except pancreas, blood tests are ok as well.
we left her there because she was groggy from pain meds, very worried now as it's been a year of this, off and on, and she's old

I think if you only give her low fat ID she will be fine...just do not give her anything else.....you can also get the viokase and that should help as well.....

just talked to vet; they dont have enzymes and say cobalimim has nothing to do with it. ugh

cobalamin should be tested in case there is some GI disease.....low B12 does not cause pancreatitis but mnay dogs that have pancreatitis can also have IBD and those dogs can have low B12...so I would test for that....your dog could have IBD concurrently and that should be evaluated....especially since so many relapses...

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

and the cobalamin/folate, helps rule out IBD...

what's ibd?

sounds like vet being dogmatic...too bad.....

IBD= inflammatory bowel disease...

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

They can get the enzymes even if they don't currently have.....does not sound like they being very helpful.....

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
ok thanks, ***** ***** faith in them especially since they recommended treats that probably got her sick

Yes, I do not allow my pancreatitis dogs to have any treats outside their food...too dangerous.....

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
thanks so much, hopefully they'll take a lot of money off the bill since they suggested the treats that nearly killed her

Can I offer any further advice or help?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 23 days ago
no, you've been very helpful!

sure, glad to help. Summary:

feed only low fat ID, start viokase enzymes....

find a vet that is willing to do cobalamin/folate/CPL test...

It is a conversation we (dog people) had at the off leash today. One person said that a dog should never be given cheese as it cuases pancreatitis.
