My 15 LB dog...

My 15 LB dog just ate 4 dark chocolate covered almonds - about .5 OZ -- should I take her to the vet? She already ate something yesterday (not sure what) and has had diarrhea all day.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name and age?

Lulu, age 1.5, chihuahua/doxie/terrier mix

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Lulu?

She is 1.5 years old

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Lulu?

She ate something yesterday and has had diarrhea all day. But seems to be in good spirits.

No, please don't be alarmed. Almonds aren't toxic and it would take nearly 5 ounces of pure dark chocolate to intoxicate a 15 lb dog with the theobromine in chocolate (vomiting, agitation, tremors soon after ingestion). As with ingesting anything unusual transient gastrointestinal distress in the form of inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea can arise but Lulu wasn't intoxicated and will remain safe. There's no need to induce emesis or treat in any manner. Please respond with further questions or concerns.

OK great thanks! Any suggestions on how to treat her current diarrhea since I'm not sure what is causing it?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
that's my only follow up question... so I don't need a phone call

Diarrhea resulting from a dietary indiscretion should abate within 72 hours unaided and so treating with anything more than bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate/Pepto Bismol) shouldn't be necessary. You can dose Pepto Bismol in the wide range of 0.125 - 1 mL per pound of body weight. That would be equivalent to 2 - 15 mL of Pepto Bismol for a 15 lb Lulu. 5 mL = 1 measuring teaspoon.

No worries. My state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

OK thanks! Pepto is a great idea. I was mostly worried about the chocolate so we are all good.

You're quite welcome. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.
