Hi. My dog ate...

Hi. My dog ate chocolate covered raisens yesterday. I didn't know that raisens are also toxic to dogs. He hasn't eaten anything today and he never turns down food. He's had about two cups of water to drink today but now he's not drinking his water.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Did you see what your dog ate?

I wasn't home at the time but he ate about half a box of dark chocolate raisenets.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about your dog?

He's weighs 23 pounds if that'll help.

We can eliminate chocolate toxicity as it would take nearly 7 ounces of pure dark chocolate to intoxicate your dog. Raisins can become toxic at doses of greater than 0.43 grams per pound of body weight. How many grams or ounces of Raisinets were in that box, please?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
It's a 3.5 ounce box.

Thank you. Let's assume that there were 3 ounces of raisins in a full box and he would then have ingested about 1.5 ounces (45 grams) of raisins. 45 grams/23 lbs = about 2 grams per pound which could be toxic to him although raisin toxicity is idiosyncratic (peculiar); in other words, most dogs can ingest raisins to their heart's content without harm.

This toxicity involves kidney damage and symptoms of vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weakness are seen 12-24 hours post-ingestion. Because you're seeing anorexia it would be prudent to have his vet check the blood work and urinalysis needed to assess kidney health. This should be done after a 4 hour fast so don't encourage his eating. Never restrict water, however. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
