Customer Question
He's 15 and last...

He's 15 and last night, when I pet his head to wake him up to go outside, he snapped and growled at me like he didn't know who I was.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Is this new behavior?

Yes. He's never done this before.

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name?

Dallas

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Dallas?

He's got testicular cancer and is taking medicine to keep him comfortable. He's eating, drinking and going potty as normal. The vet says to keep him happy since they don't feel comfortable doing surgery/putting him under.

I understand you have some concerns about Dallas's recent change in behavior and mental awareness. Dogs can get dementia (cognitive dysfunction) just like people. There are prescription diets and medication that can help slow down the progression of dementia in pets to some degree.

Is he a large or small breed dog?

Large, he's a black lab, about 50 pounds.
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Is there a reason he would growl at me, who has been in his life the whole time, and not my boyfriend, who he's known a year?
Dog Veterinarian: Drhollowayvet,

Ok. Thank you. He is up there in age for a large breed dog. You must take really good care of him!

I can understand your vet not wanting to put him under for surgery also at this age for a large breed dog.

He likely didn't know who you were. Did his mental state appear off? Did he look confused at the time?

If so, that is what dementia does. It confuses the pet.

He looked confused and scared. Almost like he thought I might hurt him, which I have never done.

Poor guy. : (

There is a medication (supplement) called Selegiline (Anipryl) that your vet could prescribe that treats for this sort of thing. It sounds like he may have the beginning stages of canine dementia.

Also there is a prescription dog food that supports overall brain health and development in older pest called Hill's B/D. This is a prescription diet that you can request from your veterinarian as well.
