Customer Question
My dog is not...

My dog is not able to go up and down his favorite chair. He is also not eager to go for a walk. And he whimpers when I touch his belly. I took him to the vet yesterday and he didn't find anything wrong. Gave some antibiotics as the dog had a slight fever.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is your dog's name and age?

Aidan and he is almost 9.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Aidan?

He just had a bunch of stones removed from his urethra in January. 20+ stones actually.

I am sorry to hear you are worried about Aidan. When a dog stops wanting to walk, and get onto furniture, it can be a sign of back or neck pain.

Did your veterinarian do any tests or Xrays?

I might see if starting him on pain medication helps. Is he eating?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 27 days ago
The vet did a blood test to rule out pancreatitis. He said the blood result didn't show he had it. The vet gave him antibiotic for 7 days. Aidan was able to go up the chair until yesterday when he came back from the vet. Now he can't even go up. He tries but isn't able to pull his body up the chair. I removed the cushion and he pulled himself up his chair. His appetitie is reduced. i'm giving him Royal canine SO as he had 22 stones removed from his urethera in January.

He sounds painful, and I would ask your veterinarian about starting pain medication.

If he is eating and not vomiting, you could try aspirin; how much does he weigh? It would be safer and more effective to get prescription pain medication from your veterinarian.

I did give him baby asprin 81 mg on Sunday at 7:00 pm. The vet wasn't very happy about it yesterday. What could be wrong with Aidan?

What breed is he?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 27 days ago

He could have back or neck pain, or internal pain.

Or it could be something affecting his nerves, so his legs don't work normally.

he's 19 lbs.
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 27 days ago

I understand; I have problems sending answers sometimes.

If he is18.8 pounds, he could take 1 baby aspirin with food, provided he does not vomit. Did it help at all when you gave aspirin? If he is not eating, I would not give it again.

I think it helped but the vet freaked me out by saying it might be toxic. He's eating a little bit.
Customer reply replied 27 days ago
He’s a Pomeranian mix. Got him from a shelter so don’t know for sure.
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 27 days ago

If a dog is eating, and it does not cause vomting, a dog his size can take one baby aspirin twice daily with food. No Advil or Aleve.

It would be safer to get pain medication from your veterinarian, however.

manage his pain and wait? I have a certification exam on Monday and I’m really nervous and Aidan isn’t helping by being sick
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 27 days ago

An Xray of his spine might be a good idea.

Immediately or later?
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 27 days ago

That depends on how concerned you are. If you are really worried, have an Xray done. Or, you can get prescriptoin pain medication from your veterinarian and if that does not help, I would then have an Xray done.

It is a conversation we (dog people) had at the off leash today. One person said that a dog should never be given cheese as it cuases pancreatitis. Most of us have never heard of this although I know that a high fat diet /low carb diet can cause it. Most cheeses (particularly many processed Cheddar) is very high fat so that may be where the idea comes from. … read more
