Customer Question
We have an almost...

We have an almost two year old Havapoo. He has these spells since he was a baby where he starts throwing up. He starts to make the regurgitating sound then he desperately trays to eat the carpet until I let him outside to eat grass. Sometimes he throws up his food, sometimes it's just bile. A few times I've taken him to the emergency vet and they do xrays but can never find the cause. We've switched his food to Science Diet Low Fat I/D and we've taken away all possible chew toys that he could be ingesting. Do Havapoos or cross breeds in general have a bad gene or breading issues that would cause this? Something in his esophagus maybe? Thank you

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the dog eat anything unusual?

No

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name and age?

Henry, 2 years old in May this year

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Henry?

2

I'm sorry to hear of this with Henry. To answer you directly, mixed breeds are less likely to suffer from heritable congenital (present at birth) defects due to hibrid vigor - not having two recessive (and damaging) genes governing a particular system or function. Henry's differential diagnoses should include esophageal disorders such as megaesophagus, cricopharyngeal achalasia (swallowing defect/rare), Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism) and the neuromuscular disorder myasthenia gravis. Hiatal hernia and pyloric outflow obstruction syndrome are other important considerations as are food intolerance and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Investigation of such a patient could include a barium X-ray study of the gastrointestinal tract, fluoroscopy to study GI motility, testing for myasthenia with the acetylcholine receptor antibody test, testing for Addison's (and other metabolic disorders) with a basic diagnostic panel of blood and urine tests, and, finally, scoping and biopsy of the GI tract which isn't performed soon enough in too many of these patients. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
