Our Shih Tzu Bailey...

Our Shih Tzu Bailey has 1cyst at his anal and a larger one up on his tail. What could be causing this?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the matter with the Shih Tzu?

The cyst are getting larger and are a dark pink. They don't seem to be bothering him although he does lick them quite often and causes them to bleed.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Where does the Shih Tzu seem to hurt?

I do not believe he is hurting.

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. No obvious pain. What is the Shih Tzu's name and age?

Bailey is his name and he will be 10 in June.

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Bailey?

Bailey is almost 10 years old

Can you take a picture of these cysts for me and post them?

As I stated, I cannot take phone calls. If you would like, I can opt out of this case so that another vet can take a call for you.

Did you get the picture of the cyst. They look horrible.

That is a very good picture, and shows me that these masses are not cysts, but are tumours. The top one looks like an adnexal tumour, and the bottom one looks like possibly a perianal adenoma. Both of them are very red and irritated from him licking at them and possibly dragging his hind end, causing damage to the surface of the masses. For now, cortisone cream 5-10% hydrocortisone cream on them and an e-collar on his head to prevent him from licking would be my recommendation.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

These need to be surgically removed, or at least biopsied to see what they are.
