Hi, I have a...

Hi, I have a relatively healthy 14 year old shih tzu. She is basically deaf and has major vision loss, however she still eats and drinks reguarly and can still run and jump on couch etc. She sleeps most of the day. Her blood work has consistintly been perfect for the most part. They did discover a heart murmur last summer that is new and she does have a significant amount of protein in her urine as of last visit. My question is: A couple weeks ago I woke up to her moving from where she was sleeping next to me in the bed and from where she moved was wet. I immediately thought it was urine. It wasn't urine. The smell was putrid but wasnt pleasant. It reminded me of sweat or saliva. It left a brownish residue on the edges of the wetness. It happened again last nght while she was with my parents. My mother said the same thing. I don't want to put her through tons of tests. I know she wont live for years. Thank you

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the Shih Tzu. What is the Shih Tzu's name?

Maggie Mae

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Maggie?

She has only a few teeth left. We had 12 pulled 2 years ago otherwise healthy as a puppy until the heart murmur and protein in urine. Acts totally normal.

She did have mucus left over after urine last year and I noticed it after a grooming visit, after urination. It was clear slightly cloudy.

I understand she has months rather than years, she isn't suffering. I don't want to subject her to millions of tests. My first thought is kidney failure.

Hi, Dr. W here. I'm sorry to hear this about Maggie, and I understand you want her to remain happy. I agree with you, all the protein is likely indicative of kidney failure.

What is the discharge that has been left on the bed? And what should I do next? She doesn't seem to be suffering.
