Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Is the feces hard?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

It starts out firm (not dry and hard) and then gets runny at the end. These last couple he has had to work pretty hard to finish.

Please give me 5-10 minutes to type your answer. No need to accept the phone call request. Thank you.

Ok. Thanks

Friend, if the feces is turning runny at the end and he continues to strain this is consistent with inflammation in the large intestines (colon). In other words, when the colon in inflamed it gives the sensation of having to defecate and for this reason, the dog continues pushing. This can be caused by parasites, infections, a foreign body, etc. to name a few causes. I would recommend dropping a stool sample for your vet to rule out intestinal parasites. In the meantime, change his diet to rice (75%) with boiled boneless chicken or ground beef (25%) until he is having normal bowel movements then wean him back into his regular puppy diet. In addition, supplement with a probiotic like Fortiflora; these are friendly bacteria that help with inflammation and regularity. You can buy a probiotic over the counter in any pet store, give at label dose.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service it is how I get compensated. See you again soon!
