My dachshund found an old prescription of rimadyl for my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. It was prescribed about a year and a half ago. He chewed open the bottle and was eating it when I got it away from him. I don't know how much he ate and I'm worried if he could be harmed from the pills.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if your dog will be able to digest that. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about your dog?

He's an older dog. About 10 or 11 years old.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Yes, he could definitely be harmed if he ingested any of the pills. How long ago did this happen?

About two hours ago

Okay, so at this point it is already in his system. I was going to recommend inducing vomiting but it is probably too late. So, he needs to see the ER vet where they can give medication to bind the rimadyl and iv fluids to flush it out of his system. Then 12 hours after the ingestion blood work will be run to see if it has affected his liver or kidneys.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

If you take him now it is going to cost less than if you wait and see if he ends up with liver or kidney inflammation and try to treat it then. That would involve days of hospitalization.

Ok thank you

They will put him on medication to protect the lining of his gastrointestinal tract as well. Hopefully they will do that tonight and then send him home with a request to check his blood work tomorrow. If you need help financing apply at www.carecredit.com You will get an answer right away and most ER vet clinics take it. Glad to help. You are very welcome.
