Customer Question
My 12 year old...

My 12 year old English Bulldog has been bringing up very thick, clear mucous (like rubber cement) from his mouth ever since I had some mast cell tumors and a dropped salivary gland surgically removed from his throat a couple months ago. Sometimes he chokes on this mucous. It’s alwats worse while and after he’s eating. Is there something non-invasive I can give him to break up the mucous so it doesn’t affect his breathing? Thank you in advance!

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Coughing can be worrying. The Expert will know what you should do. What is the dog's name?

Tony

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Tony?

No. Other than that he’s had several mast cell tumors removed over the last 5-6 years. He’s never had radiation or chemotherapy and I don’t want to treat him with that now. I’m looking for the least-invasive treatment options to help with his symptoms and keep him comfortable.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. To answer you directly, the only mucolytic used in small animal medicine is acetylcysteine and it's only used as an inhaled solution to break up mucus in the pulmonary tree. Keeping well hydrated will thin saliva, however. Ideally, the source of that thick, clear mucus needs to be determined to best know how to address it. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
