Having trouble walking and now she is throwing up phlem

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

Pateller displasia Thought that was the reason yesterday, but now she is stumbling and it seems like her front legs dont hold her.

I'm sorry to hear that your dog is having trouble walking and is throwing up phlegm. What kind of dog is she and how old is she?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
cairn terrier about 10 years old
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
stumbling and having trouble walking. Just sits down. Now not eating.
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
coughing up clear liquid like she is clearing her lungs
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
Just sleeping and does not want to move
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 29 days ago

My main concern is that small breed dogs can develop heart valve disease of their mitral valve that can lead to congestive heart failure. Fluid accumulates in the lungs because the heart cannot pump it efficiently, and the accumulated fluid can come out of the nose or mouth. Heart disease can also cause weakness and stumbling. I would take her to the vet for an exam and chest x-rays to rule out congestive heart failure.

If it's not too advanced, it can be treated with medication for some time to give a longer, improved quality of life.

She was at the vet yesterday. At that time he gave us an anti-inflammatory because he thought it was back or knee joint
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
The coughing of the phlem is new today. Also, she ate yesterday but will not eat today. Will drink water
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
I am leaning toward a disc problem. If so, why the coughing of fluid in her lungs? Just talking out loud.
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
She is a very active dog. this is a very acute onset of pain and inactivity. trying to figure it out.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 29 days ago

I would not expect a disc problem to cause coughing of fluid from her lungs. It's possible that she's got a disc/musculoskeletal problem going on, but something else in her chest might be going on, also.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
the coughing had me concerned and I thought it was not a good sign that fluid was in her lungs
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
She can not walk. Walks like she is intoxicated and then finally gives up and sits down
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
Shakes when she walks also but not when laying down
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 29 days ago

If she's got a heart condition, oxygenated blood is not being pumped efficiently enough which causes the brain to not receive oxygen. So that could be why she seems intoxicated. The lack of oxygen also causes weakness.

Is she in danger this weekend? Should we just make her comfortable and let her rest till Monday?
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
What should we watch for and what signals would make us take her to the ER
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 29 days ago

The main worry is that she could have trouble breathing. If she does, I would get her to the ER. You can count her sleeping respiratory rate. It should be less than 30 breaths per minute.

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 29 days ago

You mentioned walking as though she is intoxicated. Is it possible that she actually got into some kind of toxin?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
Probably no toxin. I worked from home yesterday and she slept all day and today she is worse. Unless it is delayed. I will look outside for a toxin but none come to mind.
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
I accidentally hit "call me" disregard
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
She was lethargic yesterday but still ate some chicken at lunch time. Wont eat today.
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
had hard wood mulch installed this week but we do that every year
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 29 days ago

I think her signs are serious enough that I would not wait until Monday to find out what is going on. She could go downhill quickly.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
When she tries to walk she stumbles and shakes like having a seizure. She seems like she can not control her movements. then just sits down
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 29 days ago

That sounds pretty serious.

just coughed up some more phlem. She rests comfortably but can't walk or eat
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
no elevated respiration
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Dog Veterinarian replied 29 days ago

It's worrying that she can't walk or eat. You could wait until Monday to have her seen, but I wouldn't, and definitely not if her sleeping respiratory rate goes about 30 breaths per minute.

Unfortunately the dog had to be put down. We did go to the pet hospital the day you were helping us and the dog was in distress.
She was diagnosed with acute fulminating myasthenia gravis.
Thought you would like to know.
