Hello. My dog had a large softball sized abscess on his side near left back leg. It never ruptured. He was on antibiotics for 3.5 weeks and it is way down. Still a bump - is that part of healing?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the dog's name?

Mr. Brown

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Mr.?

Nope he’s fine not lethargic eating playing etc

You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin. Welcome to JustAnswer. I'm currently typing up my reply. Please be patient. This may take a few minutes.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

If a softball-sized infected abscess were never lanced, flushed, and debrided (devitalized tissue removed), it's very unlikely that a systemic antibiotic could effectively penetrate into the pus and completely resolve the infection; you would be seeing evidence of unresolved infection at this time. If the abscess were sterile, however, it could have resorbed in time without an antibiotic on board Mr. Brown and you're simply seeing an incompletely resolved sterile abscess. Mr. Brown's vet can needle aspirate this bump and examine the aspirate microscopically for evidence of persistent infection. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

It was never lanced vet said to try antibiotics first

Thank you for the additional information. I never argue with success but it's not standard of care to treat a softball sized abscess conservatively (medically) only. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

I thought it was strange as well

My husband is always saying wait and see but we’ve been dealing with this since Feb 5

You're quite welcome. I understand. I would aspirate it. Hopefully it's now just a seroma (serum-containing) and can be left alone to finally resorb.
