My old dog has been struggling with what seems to be asthma,

Customer Question
My old dog has...

My old dog has been struggling with what seems to be asthma, a rash and is arthritic. My vet who I really like and think is very good recommended a course of steroids. Hoping a course would help all 3 conditions. Macrolone is the drug he gave us. Tom has had 4 x 20ml tablets over the last 4 days. He is now breathing at a frantic rate constantly. He is unsettled and struggling to relax. These were symptoms he had before but they were spasmodic but now they are constant. I would take him tomorrow but our vet is closed. What do you think? I am happy to take him to another vet in the morning. Thank you

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the dog's name?

Tom.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Tom?

I have only had Tom for a year after he had a few months in an animal shelter. I don't think he had great care there or previously as he, and his brother, Sam, who we adopted as well, were not house trained or been on a lead. So I am not sure what his nutrition was like before we had him.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I'm sorry to hear of this with Tom. How much does he weigh, please? I need to assess if he's being overdosed with prednisolone (Macralone) - a glucocorticoid (steroid) known to cause panting.

Tom is 25 kgs.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Thank you. 20 mg/25 kg = 0.8 mg/kg which is considered an anti-inflammatory rather than immunosuppressive dose. It isn't excessive but can cause the panting due to flushing of the skin and the sensation of heat by Tom. Because asthma isn't a disorder of dogs an allergic bronchitis or other cardiopulmonary disorder also needs to be considered in a dog panting so severely. X-rays of Tom's thorax (chest) need to be considered. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
