He's very lethargic, won't...

He's very lethargic, won't eat, and walks as if his hind legs aren't working right.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name and age?

Baxter he's 11. When I walk in the house he barely gets up to greet me then immediately goes and lays back down. He looks guilty.

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.

Again I do apologize that my colleagues could not aid you sooner. If you would still like assistance, can you tell me:

How long have you been seeing these signs?

Any retching, gagging, lip licking, drooling, or vomiting?

Has he been drinking more or less?

Are his gums pink, yellow, or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

If you press on his belly, any tensing, tenderness, discomfort, or pain?

Could he have eaten anything harmful (ie bones, toys, plants, chemicals, human medications/drugs, etc)?

Can you take a breathing rate for me (just count his breaths for 10 seconds + multiply by 6)?

With regards ***** ***** legs, does he just seem weak?

He's was this way last week and I took him to the vet she checked his heart and gave him a thorough abdominal exam. This time it's been about 24 hours. He's not vomiting or anything he's almost
catatonic in his eyes. He did just get up to get a drink. Nothing harmful
ingested.breathe rate 24. He's dragging his toes as if they don't work right.

Hello again,

When he was seen, did they check any bloods or ultrasound/xray his abdomen?

What medication is he on just now?

Was his vet aware of the toe dragging?

I told her about the toe dragging of course by the time of his appointment all his symptoms had subsided. No they didn't do any blood or X-ray. He taking carprofen once daily for joint stiffness. He is 11.
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
It seems to be happening about a once a week occurrence and lasts about 24 hours.

Thank you,

Now I am glad you did tell them but we do need to keep a close eye on that. This is because it sounds like he is showing early stage knuckling and that can be a sign of hind leg weakness at this age but also a neurological sign (usually from spinal nerve degeneration but sometimes from brain lesions). So, if that is persisting or worsening, we may need them to change his Carprofen to a steroid since those are better at reducing inflammation in the nervous system.

Otherwise, the appetite loss is a worry. At his age, we can see it from oral pain/dental disease (hopefully less likely post check up) , nausea (even without vomiting) or with breathing issues (less likely here). With those in mind, nausea would be a concern here and with his age, we'd not only be thinking about gut infections, pancreatitis, and IBD but also that we could be seeing this secondary to kidney or liver disease or even cancer (again hopefully that one is less likely since he has been examined).

In any case, with this all in mind, I would suggest ringing Baxter 's vet and requesting an anti-nausea treatment +/- appetite stimulant. Since he was just seen, they likely will give this to you without him having to go back in. Though if he isn't improving checking a geriatric blood panel would be ideal. Otherwise in the meantime, we can try an OTC antacid like Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid), or Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac).Whichever you choose, we’d give this 20 minutes before offering food to allow absorption. Of course, do double check with your vet if he has a known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned.

Afterwards, do try tempting him to eat (as you have). Try favorites of an easily digestible diet like cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, or meat baby food (as long as its garlic/onion free). There are also OTC vet diets that can be used (ie Hill’s I/D or Royal Canin’s sensitivity) too. Or if he cannot be tempted, then we can offer or syringe feed watered down canned puppy food, Hill's A/D, Royal Canin Recovery, or Clinicare Canine/Feline Liquid Diet. All of these are critical care diets that are calorically dense, so a little goes a long way nutrition-wise. And if we can get more nutrition into him, we'd hopefully see him perking up, reduce his toe dragging (if it is weakness induced), and help get him settled here.

Kind regards,

Dr. B
