My dog's stomach is bloated. Not hard to the touch, but when I touch it, he makes a low groaning sound. He is still drinking, but doesn't want dog food.

Lil' Boi, 10yrs old

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Lil?

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Lil?

He's just laying around, does wag his tail some. Still alert, but moves very slowly, doesn't want to go out.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago

1. Just noticed, about 2-3 days.

2. No pre existing medical conditions.

3. Chihuahua

4. No other symptoms that I can remember.

1- Is he defecating?

2- Is he eating and drinking?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago

1. Haven't paid any attention to if he was. He is peeing though as I have seen him do this.

2. He's drinking, doesn't want dog food today, but did eat last night. His ears raise and tail wags when he sees or smells table food. Have not tried to see if he would eat that (table food).

Please give me 5-10 minutes to type your answer. No need to accept the phone call request. Thank you.

Ok. Thank U

Camielle, abdominal distention in a dog can occur by many different medical conditions. It could be something as simple as being constipated. Or, there could be fluid build up in the abdomen (ascites) secondary to things like heart disease, tumors, kidney or liver disease, low protein, etc. to name a few causes. The fact that Lil' Boi is lethargic I really would want to rule a systemic disease as this can be life-threatening if the underlying cause is not identified, treated and corrected. For example, if this is related to heart disease then making the heart function better as a pump and giving medicine to remove the fluid in the abdomen. Unfortunately, on history only I will not be able to pinpoint the exact underlying cause, I am sorry. Lil' Boi will need to be seen by a veterinarian for a hands-on examination, x-rays and blood work as an initial screening test. Treatment will be based on exam and test results. If cost is a concern I would look into your local ASPCA or Shelter where they often offer veterinary services at a lower cost.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service it is how I get compensated. See you again soon!
