Hi, Dr. W here. I'm sorry to hear this. There are many things that can cause what you are describing. Sometimes blood from the nose can be from rat poison (this usually takes 5 days to show blood, so is it possible that he could have found some rat poison about 5 days ago). Other times in can be from infections or tumors (both benign or cancerous).

Just to give you a little background information. In a study by Bissett et al published in the December 15, 2007, issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 176 cases of dogs with bloody noses were reviewed to determine which underlying causes were most common. Of these 176 dogs, a definite underlying cause was found in 115 cases.

  • 30% had nasal tumors
  • 29% had trauma
  • 17% had nasal inflammation of unknown cause (idiopathic rhinitis)
  • 10% had low platelets
  • 3% had some other blood clotting abnormality
  • 2% had high blood pressure
  • 2% had tooth abscess

I have a few questions:

1- Does he have any ongoing medical history/on any medications?

2- What do you mean when you say he is not breathing right?

3- How many breaths is he taking per minute (you can count the breaths he takes in 15 seconds and multiply by 4)
