Customer Question
My dogis 14 yrs...

My dogis 14 yrs old (Pembroke welsh corgi mix) and has a large belly...took him to the vet and they drew blood work...turned out he was anemic (pale tongue and gums)....they gave him two shots antibiotics and nausea meds....from the X-rays they said his spleen and liver did not have tumors...also, no arthritis on his back....not GDV as stomach was ok as well.......4 days later my dog is moving well and still sleeps....but there is still some sway in his belly and it is hard to the touch....??? he has gone to the bathroom multiple times and the stool looks fine as I've incorporated more fiber in his diet and reduced the amount of food given to him during his meal times (2 times per day).....? have you seen this before?...

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about your dog?

Yea when i touch his belly he groans slightly...but not bad?

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. A "large belly" can indicate an abdominal effusion - free fluid in the abdominal cavity, organomegaly (enlargement of abdominal organs), or gaseous distension of the gastrointestinal tract. Which of the above was identified, please?
Can you upload a copy of all of his test results to our conversation? I understand that you might not have a copy at home but his vet can give you one which you can scan into your computer and then give me the file link or you can photograph the pages and upload them by using the paperclip icon (if you can see that icon) or by using an external app such as dropbox.com/

I not only review the test results but also note which tests should have been performed but weren't. I particularly need to see a complete blood count (CBC), thrombocyte (blood platelet) count, and an absolute reticulocyte count - all of which will help clarify if his anemia is regenerative (he can efficiently replace the red blood cells he lacks) or non-regenerative (he can't do so). This clarification is needed for his vet to know in which direction to go with additional diagnostics.
