Customer Question
Since Sunday he has...

Since Sunday he has begun not eating his food out of the bowl and he has also become lethargic. 8 month old German Shepherd. He is still eating with us hand feeding or picking out of the bowl. He is also drinking water. Bowel movements and urination are still happening regularly.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the Shepherd. What is the Shepherd's name and age?

Jordy, 8 1/2 months old.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Jordy?

His appetite has decreased.

Not at all.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Okay so generally happy and alert but perhaps just being picky about food?

Paul

Customer reply replied 3 months ago
No, not just being picky about food. He is lethargic. He is normally up and about all night, going after our cat, staring out the window. He is just laying around.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Thank you for clarifying

Where do you live- still warm there?

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Again, he is still eating, but out of hand. He normally tears through his food bowl in a matter of 3 minutes. Since Sunday just picking out of his bowl and walking away to lay down. He will eat it out of hand but takes longer. Milwaukee, WI. It is still cold here.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Thanks

I wanted to rule out spider, scorpion bites and Lyme disease

Lots of questions as I am trying to rule in/out things

He is neutered and vaccinated of course?

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
He is not neutered yet. He is only 8 months old. However, only 1 testicle has dropped. He is vaccinated.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

A-ha

I was actually worried about testicular torsion if one of the testicles is intra-abdominal

Have they found the other one?

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
We haven't had him in for a few months. We were planning reassessment and neutering at 1 year old.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Okay

There are enough reasons to have him examined tomorrow

This is not an emergency BUT I want to know about that other testicle and they can also palpate abdomen

We need to err on side of caution

Paul

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
at 8 months this can be a problem? Every vet and breeder I have spoken with said this was not a concern that the testicle hadn't dropped at this point and it was fine to reassess after he is 1 year old. If not dropped by 1 year, then it would be advised to neuter and remove non-descended testicle.
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
He is showing none of these symptoms for testicular torsion.
Extreme abdominal pain
Vomiting
Weight loss
Mass in the abdominal area
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

I was juts listing one differential

Intussusception

Acute gastritis

Metabolic disease- kidney and liver

Atypical Addisons

Just a few other differentials

Paul

Ok, thanks for nothing Paul.
Dog Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

What would you like me to tell you

I cannot examine your dog

So my job is to present differentials

He has not been eating or well for three days now

What medications would you like to give him that will miraculously make him better?

I am an exceptionally good veterinarian and have over 25 years of experience including internal medicine and ultrasound

I don't want you to give me an A-ha answer when he isn't showing any of the symptoms for testicular torsion. I am willing to discuss this as I sent my contact info for a phone call.
