My 12 yr old...

My 12 yr old golden female had presumptive fibrocartilagenous embolus spinal cord stroke 1 week ago, making good recovery. Aspiration pneumonia taking multiple antibiotics. Drinking water but no bowel movement for 5 days. Took to vet yesterday. X-ray showed no impact ion. Told to give it a couple more days. This morning she refused to eat, intermittent trembling. Soft belly. Should biscodyl or colsce be tried now? Don’t want getting impacted.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. I'm sure the Veterinarian can help with the pneumonia. What is the dog's name?

Molly. She is breathing well, no panting.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Molly?

No narcotics. Had tried metoclopramide, but not routinely over past 48 hours. No vomiting, no crying. Able to support weight on hind legs better not quite back to baseline. Urinating ok.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. To answer you directly, either docusate sodium (Colace) - a stool softener dosed at 25-100 mg per dog once to twice daily or bisacodyl - a stimulant laxative dosed at 1 - 3 tablets per dog - are safe for Molly because her X-rays didn't reveal signs of obstruction in her gastrointestinal tract. I would start in the low range of dosing and increase the dose only if need be. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
