Our thirteen year old dog has developed a mass on her belly…

Customer Question
Hi, Our thirteen year...

Hi, Our thirteen year old dog has developed a mass on her belly almost overnight. It wasn't there a week ago. It's quite large. She had a full exam in December and there was nothing there at the time.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Some lumps are serious and some aren't. Let's see what the Veterinarian has to say. What is the dog's name and age?

Stella, age 13. I can upload pictures.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Stella?

She had a UTI in December and has otherwise been in very good health.

I see a relatively well-circumscribed subcutaneous mass effect which will need to be needle aspirated and the aspirate examined microscopically in order to determine the type of mass. Rapidly growing mass lesions may represent aggressive neoplasia (cancer) but also benign cysts that have filled with fluid or abscesses - both sterile and non-sterile such as would arise if the skin had been broken and bacteria found its way under the skin. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
