Hi My dog received...

Hi My dog received sub Q fluids Monday night around 11PM and it has settled to her left side behind the front leg. She growls and is very jumpy if you touch that area. The vet did labs this morning and everything looked fine and gave gabapentin for pain. Is this normal to still have fluids pooling about 36 hours later?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is your dog's name and age?

Loxxi and she is 3 in a few weeks

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Loxxi?

She had grapes on Monday night, induced vomiting, had the fluids, charcoal and labs done

Veterinarian's Assistant: Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did Loxxi eat anything unusual?

She is very lethargic today

Thanks, ***** ***** like her lab report from today?

Fluids persisting for that length of time have either been administered to excess or Loxxi is unable to absorb them because she's unable to rid herself of fluids due to renal insufficiency. Yes, I would like to review her labs, please.

How many grapes did she ingest and how much does she weigh, please?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Thank you. It would take ~0.3 grapes per pound of body weight (16 grapes for Loxxi) for us to be concerned about grape toxicity. This toxicity is idiosyncratic (peculiar) as well; in other words, most dogs can ingest grapes to their heart's content without harm. There's nothing of concern in her labs. Loxxi is going to do well. That fluid will be absorbed shortly. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
