Hiya. My 13-pound terrier...

Hiya. My 13-pound terrier mix ate maybe 4 or 5 grapes about 34 hours ago I induced vomiting successfully within the hour and she seemed fine. she hasn't had a problem urinating, has not had diarrhea, and is not vomiting

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if the terrier will be able to digest that. What is the terrier's name and age?

Pippin, 1 yr she seems fine, just a little depressed. she's eating but basically only treats

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Pippin?

She's been going under her bed a lot in the last 2 weeks, but it's been quite a bit since I made her vomit. I can't tell if she's upset with me for making her vomit or if she's sick she's a little less energetic than usual

If it's worth mentioning - there was a major storm that came through my town last night. Thunder, lightning, major rain, etc. I'm probably just being overly cautious here, but thought it was worth looking into just in case. We went for a walk this morning (roughly 34 hrs after ingestion) and she was being her usual self, chasing after squirrels. Stool was a little soft but certainly not diarrhea.

Bravo to you for making her vomit! If you're confident all the grapes came up than she probably just has an upset belly from the vomiting. I'd give her 10mg of pepcid AC twice daily for the next day or so. Offer her bland tasty food like boiled chicken/hamburger and rice. If there's any possibility a grape didn't come up than a blood panel should be checked to make sure no kidney issues.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

The storm could definitely cause some stress, but if she was normal on her walk I doubt it's causing the issue now.

Ok. This is going to sound ridiculous, but since I sort of doubt she understands the gravity of having consumed a grape, is it possible she's just upset with me for holding open her mouth and giving her a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and making her vomit?

I suppose for a few minutes...I don't think she's holding a grudge 34 hours later.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Hope she gets back to normal soon. If not don't hesitate to see your vet. Let me know if I can help in any other way! Kindly consider rating my answer; you can always get back to me with questions and updates after rating.

Great, thanks so much. I'll see how she's feeling when I go home on my lunch break. I'll boil up some rice and hot dogs or something and see if that whets her appetite for more normal food. I reckon after this long she should probably be exhibiting more obvious signs of distress if her kidneys are failing

In grape toxicity cases they say to do a baseline kidney level and then repeat in 48-72 hours later. So it could happen anytime within 3 days. Keep a close eye!

I took her out of her crate just now and she was totally herself. Gobbled down hot dogs and rice for lunch, ran around and played, did her business outside. Seems like the grape crisis was resolved in time.
Great!
