Hey..ok my dachshund ingested less than .5 oz of a dark chocolate bar ( edible) so clearly he is stoned. He has vomited

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know if your dachshund will be able to digest that. What is your dachshund's name and age?

hello

Understood

Okay well the clinical signs we are seeing are consistent with that

Can you tell me his breathing rate and heart rate please (put hand on chest behind left elbow)

Paul

Customer reply replied 4 months ago
well he's super stoned but his heart rate does not seem to be racing to me
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
how do I calculate it

Count number of beats in 15 seconds and multiply by four

What is respiratory rate?

Is he able to lift his head? Swallow?

Paul

oh crud so hard to say. He can lift his head and I got him to eat some food but he is so stoned he really wants to lie down

Okay

At this point we need to keep a very close watch on him

Ideally we would have him under observation at an ER clinic so they can counteract the sedation and protect him from aspiration

IF you can stay up with him then you can keep him at home

I would not give him anything more to eat

Time will be needed for the effects to wear off

Paul

how long do I need to stay up and monitor him

For sure for the next few hours or until he is more alert and able to lift head and protect his airway

Paul
