Oh, he's developed food...

Oh, he's developed food sensitivies over the last nine months. It comes and goes. My vet has tested him for worms, girardia, and blood test for any underlying condition. Nothing. He is healthy, energetic, but even with a strict grain free, non-poultry diet, he still gets bouts of diarrhea or vomits water every week or so. The symptoms last a day, or 24 hours, then he is back to normal.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the dog eat anything unusual?

Not that I can tell. He used to get treats, but those are completely out of his diet now.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Rudy, almost 3 year old terrier

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Rudy?

He had surgery last summer for a luxating paterlla, and the upset stomach issues started a few months after he recovered.

Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm sorry to hear that Rudy has been having diarrhea. It does sound like he could have food allergies. The way to test for them is to put him on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 3 months (and he shouldn't get anything else, and should get a topical heart worm prevention).

There are a couple of options that will meet the requirements of a diet trial. They are Hill's H/A and the various Royal Canin hypoallergenic diets (kangaroo, venison, rabbit). The Hill's diet is formulated to have the food particles broken up to be so small that his immune system will not even be able to detect them (so it will not react to the food). The principle behind the Royal Canin diets is the feed Rudy a source of protein he has never eaten before (assuming he has never eaten one of the flavors - kangaroo, venison, or rabbit). So you can choose either method (small particle diet or novel protein diet), depending on what your vet recommendations and what you can get easily. If Rudy stops having diarrhea on the prescription diet food, but it comes back when you go back to his old food, that means that Rudy has food allergies and he should be on the prescription diet long-term. It's great that you have tried non-poultry and grain-free foods, but they do not work for all dogs.

The vet had me try a royal canine prescriptive, and in the ingredient list was chic***** *****ver. despite the product being so "Broken down" he vomited and continued to have diarhea until I put him back on Zignature whitefish canned food.
I used to give him freeze dried rabbit treats, but he can't digest those anymore; it triggers an upset stomach. Do food allergies also cause a sensitive stomach overall?

Okay thank you for the additional information. Have you tried the Hill's hypoallergenic diet? Also, does the whitefish diet you are feeding have fat and calcium in it? Because those ingredients are necessary. Another possibility besides food allergies is that Rudy has irritable bowel disease. This can sometimes be detected on abdominal ultrasound. The treatment for it is oral prednisone (as low of a dose as possible to keep diarrhea away). There are risks to long-term steroid therapy with prednisone, though. I would get an abdominal ultrasound done to take a look at the intestines. If there is evidence of IBD on ultrasound, I would try a course of prednisone for a few weeks. If there is no evidence of IBD, I would try the Hill's diet. Yes, food allergies do trigger an upset stomach. You can trying giving him so Pepcid to settle it and see if that helps. How much does he weigh?

I believe the food has everything he needs. I inserted the ingredient list below. Your answers have been very helpful, and have given me better insight into food allergies. His vet did not think it was IBS, and noted that if he did not get better, an ultrasound should be done. My mistake was last fall, I thought it was just food, not treat allergies, and kept giving him treats after he was better for 2-3 weeks. He is 13 pounds. Last question for today, what causes IBS in dogs? I know humans get it from variety of issues, and stress can be a major factor. He is a high strung terrier.Ocean Whitefish, Fish Broth, Peas, Sunflower Oil, Chickpeas, Flaxseed, Tricalcium Phosphate, Agar-Agar, Calcium Carbonate, Sun-Cured Alfalfa Meal, Carrots, Salt, Choline Chloride, Cranberries, Blueberries, Potassium Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Niacin Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic acid)

Okay, it does look like that diet is complete, so that's good. To be honest, we don't really know what causes IBS in dogs. It may be stress, but there haven't been any studies that show this to be the case. We do see it more commonly in dogs with food allergies, though, so the IBS might be a worsening of food allergies.
