Hello. Are Previcox Tablets...

Hello. Are Previcox Tablets and Tramadol Capsules effectively the same medication?

Veterinarian's Assistant: What sort of animal are we talking about?

Dog — Border Collie, 14 years old.

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. I'll do all I can to help. What is wrong with the dog?

He's nearing his final days. He's overweight and has a sore rear leg. The Previcox seems to have given him enough pain relief to move around; currently, I only have Tramadol Capsules. Are they a substitute or should I get more Previcox?

Veterinarian's Assistant: The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name and age?

Dylan, 14 years-old.

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Dylan?

14 years-old.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Dylan?

His diet is hypo-allergenic, due to allergies to beef, chicken and lamb. He has some large fatty growths, which his vet is aware of and has been monitoring. They don't interfere with his joints but slightly affect his balance.

Hi,

I am sorry Dylan is struggling and it is great he is receiving some good effective medication to control inflammation and pain.

Previcox and Tramadol are two very different drugs. Previcox is a non steroidal anti inflammatory medication used to treat inflammation with a mild/moderate effect against pain. Tramadol is an opioid painkiller that solely helps with pain (moderate to severe) both compliment each other very well so should provide a greater level of comfort for Dylan during this period of his life.

Kind regards

Dr Dan
