Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

How long has she had these signs?

Is it a harsh or soft cough?

Any nasal discharge? What color? From one or both nostrils?

Are her gums pink or pale/white?

Can you take a breathing rate for me (just count her breaths for 10 seconds + multiply by 6)?

i just noticed the signs last night. her cough it soft sometimes and kind of harsh other times. when its harsh coughs up a white flem. her gums are pale to white. her breathing seems to be about 5 breaths per 10 seconds.

Oh dear,

Now I am quite concerned about Emma.

The cough being so sudden in onset likely represents an infectious process (ie pneumonia, upper airway infection, etc) or inflammatory one (ie asthma) but we have a problem with her gums being that color with a breathing rate that is almost double what it should be. To see those tells us that she has reduced oxygenation even though she is breathing harder to try to get more oxygen into her lungs. We can see similar signs with heart disease or low red blood cell volumes but with that cough that tells us the lungs and airway are likely involved.

Now in this situation because we have signs of poor oxygen uptake which can become too severe for them to manage as time goes on (due to respiratory fatigue) we would really want her seen urgently. We want a local vet putting her on oxygen to stabilize her breathing and then we'd want an exam +/- xray to look for the above so we can target treatment (bronchodilators, antibiotics, etc) and get her settled before she starts to collapse with this.

In this situation, just in case you do wish to see an ER vet, you can check @ http://www.vetlocator.com/ or https://www.veccs.org/facility-directory/

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
