Hi Deb. Me again. Miles...
Hi Deb. Me again. Miles Davis has a 6 in one vaccine about 7 hours ago and seemed fine. Now he does have pain at site. I wouldn’t have known but i bathed him and he jerked back his leg and whimpered. Since his bath he’s s bit lethargic and shaking. I’m hoping he’s just chilled from bath but being the over anxious freak mom, it’s rattled me. When should i be concerned? The vet did call to infirm me all his blood work is perfect. Thanks!!

He seems much better. Still kinda lethargic but i guess that’s normal after vaccines. I get pretty concerned quickly. Thank you! If anything else comes up, I’ll be sure to ask you! He’s my little love!

Well that's good, I'm glad to hear he is feeling better. And yes, being a little lethargic is perfectly normal. But good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Kim,

I'm sorry that I was offline when you posted about Miles Davis. It's not uncommon for dogs to experience mild vaccine reactions; they can run mild fevers for about 24 hours but then will return to normal.

If you have a thermometer, you can double check his temperature; normal is between 100 and 102.5. If it's a little higher than this, I wouldn't worry unless it's still high on Monday although it's not likely to be. You could give him Benadryl at a dose of 1 mg per pound of body weight twice a day although I don't typically suggest it when my patients run a mild fever.....primarily because sedation can be seen as a side effect. If they continue to be more lethargic than normal, we don't know whether to blame the drug or if the patient is worsening, if that makes sense. And, fevers secondary to vaccine don't typically last very long so treating them is usually not necessary. I would alert your vet, though, since they may suggest that you pre-medicate with Benadryl prior to future vaccines.

If he still a little uncomfortable at the injection site, you could give him Aspirin at a dose of 5-10 mgs per pound of body weight twice a day with food.

I suspect he'll be just fine but I'll be online tomorrow if you're still worried about him. Deb

Thank you! He did improve this evening. And ate dinner. I appreciate your kindness.

Kim,

Always a pleasure.

I'm glad to hear that he doesn't seem any worse for wear, as they say....and if he's eating, then he can't be feeling too bad:) Take care, Deb
