Customer Question
My pet has been...

My pet has been panting excessively for hours. He has vomited six times and is restless and can't breathe

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What sort of animal are we talking about?

A pug. He is 11 years old. I have the blood reports

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did the pug eat anything unusual?

Not that I am aware of

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the pug's name and age?

Name is ***** ***** age is 11 years

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Romeo?

He has had chronic coughing issues. He had pneumonia once. This episode of constant panting has occurred before but usually it would get better with medicine.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Romeo, please? I reviewed the test results and can see that he's in severe kidney failure. This is most likely a chronic kidney failure as he's also anemic but without a complete urinalysis that assessment can't be made. Assessment of his panting at this time requires X-rays of his chest. Excessive panting, however, can be caused by quite a few disorders. It's often seen with elevated ambient temperature, exercise, anxiety, or perceived pain. To confound the diagnosis further, it's also seen with fever, narcotic administration, glucocorticosteroid (prednisone, e.g.) therapy, Cushing's disease, hyperthyroidism, hypocalcemia (low serum calcium level), pheocromocytoma (an adrenal gland tumor), cardiac disease, tachyarrhythmias (fast irregular heart rates), brain disease and obesity.
