Runny diarrhea. Had it last week, doc gave her pro-pectalin, was ok for three days. Started again Friday. Vet now has her on pro-pectalin,proiable andfenbendazole. All blood work I'd normal. She has not eaten in 2 days. I am ver concerned about organ failure.help

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What sort of animal are we talking about?

Miniature daschund, 4 years old, spayed

Veterinarian's Assistant: Maybe I'm confused. I thought you had a problem with a pet. Is that correct?

Yes, miniature dacshund

Veterinarian's Assistant: The Expert will know if the dachshund will be able to digest that. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dachshund?

She has not eaten since thurs pm. She is 4yrs old and has been spayed. She had kidney stone 2 yrs ago but I am not seeing any blood. Worried about organ failure

Greetings, I am Dr. Peck, hopefully I can be of some help.

It is very good that her bloodwork was checked and appeared normal. I'm not seeing any mention of vomiting or blood in her diarrhea either so that is also good. But the anorexia concurrent with the persistent diarrhea is more concerning. Does she also seem lethargic? Was anything else recommended by your vet such as other medications or diagnostics? What have you offered her to eat?

Write me back when you are able to and I will reply as soon as I can, thanks- Dr. Peck.

She has been given hills science r/d until the stroll problems stop. She will not eat it, so I'e added boiled chicken breast, no skin or seasoning. Also, the pro viable sprinkles seen to discourage her. She is a little lethargic, but that is not out of ordinary for her.

Waiting for reply, did you get my latest message?

Since she isn't eating well, I would be more inclined at this time to start offering her a variety of options, but continuing to try to keep them bland. The plain boiled chicken breast is a perfect example. If she's eating that - stick with it and then recheck with your local vet during regular hours to discuss further diagnostics (abdominal imaging with x-rays or ultrasound, infectious GI panel, parasite screen, etc.) or further treatments (I'd be considering adding on metronidazole to the medications she's currently on).

In the mean time the biggest concern is her not eating. Since she doesn't seem too lethargic, and isn't vomiting or having blood in her stools, it doesn't sound urgent, but if she's continuing to have diarrhea and be a finicky eater rechecking does seem indicated.

Other options besides the chicken to try might be plain rice, cottage cheese, baby food, ground turkey, or scrambled eggs- all may be enticing enough to get her to eat sometime but will still be easy on her GI tract.

Thanks, I'll try scrambled egg. The vet did do a stool sample last week when she first had diarrhea, negative for worms. But she may have parasites picked up in the yard. She does not go to dog parks or fet out of my yard except to visit the vet, that's why the put her on the fenbendazole. I'm hesitant to give her more medication. Will wait until Mon. That will be 4 days without food, then I will definitely panic. Seriously considering euthanization. Don't want to do this but also don't want her to suffer. This has been financially difficult on me. Accessed anal gland 2014, kidney stones 2016, now this - whew!

I'm sorry to hear that!

I'd suggest trying the metronidazole before euthanizing, it is a pretty cheap option and helps a lot of diarrhea cases. But yes definitely stick with trying the different food options over the weekend. The infectious GI panel or x-rays is going to run up cost more, so if diarrhea not resolved by monday metronidazole might be a good next step to keep costs lower, unless she's otherwise declining.

Good luck! Don't forget to rate kindly with the stars on your screen. :)
