Customer Question
My dog has liver...

My dog has liver failure and last night she had a first time ever seizure. My local vet is normally open on Sat. but is closed today. So I'm looking for some info. My dog is doing fine now but I have several questions.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Seizures always look scary. Let's get you talking to the Veterinarian. What is your dog's name and age?

Augusta and age 14 y/o

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Augusta?

14

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Augusta?

She is taking thyroid medication, immodium for anti-diarrheal and currently on antibiotic baytril 60mg half tab twice a day

I'm sorry to hear of this with Augusta. You appear to be describing a seizure due to hepatoencephalopathy (a poorly functioning lever intoxicating the brain) which can often be reversed by medications that increase gastrointestinal protein tolerance such as lactulose; antibiotics such as metronidazole or neomycin, and mannitol to control cerebral edema which is likely to have precipitated the seizure. Regretfully, the prognosis for seizuring patients due to liver failure is grave because seizures are often refractory to treatment. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Is there any way to know how often the seizures will occur?
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
is there any preventive measures we can do over the weekend? Our Vet is not open until Monday. And do you have any advice for when we need to leave Augusta alone in the house while we're out?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Regretfully, no, but we would expect fewer seizures if her hepatoencephalopathy were intensively treated as I posted above. Fasting her or at least limiting the protein she receives can be helpful. That's not easy to do without ultra-low protein prescription diets. She shouldn't be left alone; instead a 24-hour veterinary facility is preferable until she can see her vet on Monday. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
