I have a Klee...

I have a Klee Kai and she just started acting lethargic yesterday. She didn't eat this morning and seems to be having shallow, yet quick breathing. She had some coughing, which we thought mature be allergies. She just had her yearly appointment about a month ago and all came bavk good. What could it be?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What sort of animal are we talking about?

Dog. An Alaskan Klee Kai

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name?

Dabbi

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Dabbi?

She is about 12 or 13.... she was at my parents this week. She was normal until yesterday. They live in a retirement home and take their dog out walking about 4 to 5 times a day... and she is not used to that. She also has bad knees....

Hello. My name is***** am happy to help you with your question. Give me just a moment to respond and type.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Does she normally have coughing from allergies? Is she having trouble breathing or getting air? What color are her gums? Any nasal drainage or sneezing?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Her gums are black

I can not call right now. Another expert may be able to call if you prefer a phone call over this format.

It just popped up. I thought you initiated that.
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
No drainage or sneezing.
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I just timed her and she took 34 breaths in 30 seconds

Sorry about the pop up. The website does that.

I was having you check her gum color because if the gums were pale, purple, or abnormal that could indicate a problem with her oxygen intake or circulation. That could indicate a more serious issue like heart disease or pneumonia.

But if her entire mouth is black, we will not be able to tell.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

That is double normal. Is she having any trouble breathing or getting air in? How often is she coughing?

Is she more stiff than usual or having trouble getting up and down? Pain can cause an increase in the respiratory rate.

Her inside upper lip/gum seems to be pink... like our color pink.
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Seems that she is "breathing" ok...just fast. Not stiff at all...more melts into me when I pick her up. Her walking seems to be more like she just came out of anesthesia. She is asleep

Okay. Maybe she is exhausted from her visit with your parents. You did say she walked a lot more than usual.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
she did... we were thinking the same thing, but the breathing was making me nervous.

Dogs also commonly breathe rapidly when they are sleeping.

Continue to monitor her gum color. If her gums turn pale or purple. she needs to see a vet.

If her coughing becomes frequent or you hear wheezing or she coughs up phlegm she needs to see the vet as well.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I would see how she is in the morning. Most regular vets are open on Saturday mornings. Then you can avoid the emergency clinic.

My dogs sleep for 24 hours after a trip or staying at kennel.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Make sure she sleeps in your room tonight so you can hear her if anything is amiss.

Thank you. I will keep an eye on her! That's it? You think based on everything I told you, it is most likely exhaustion?

Yes based on everything you have told me I think she is exhausted.

But definitely keep an eye on her over the next 24 hours to see if she improves or her signs progress.

Continue to monitor her breathing, gum color, and cough.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Keep her close over night like I mentioned as well.

Ok, thank you. We feel better! Have a great night!

If her gums turn abnormal pale or purple, or she has trouble breathing, or wheezing, or she coughs up phlegm then take her to the ER clinic right away.

You are very welcome : )
