Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand Thunder has been eating items off the ground such as cigarettes. Do you know about how many he swallowed? That will determine whether or not he needs to be made to vomit. How is he acting otherwise, still happy and playful?

Hi! Yea it's hard to say how many things he ate off the ground. But it's been about 30 minutes. I took him outside in the backyard and he ate everything he could find, sawdust, sticks, poop etc. Then on a walk ont he street, he ate a cigarette, dirts, everything. Dust in the house. It's been pretty sudden and he's not playful and happy. We want to give him hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. Thoughts? He's a 5 year old 70 pound pitbull. Healthy.

So far the only toxic thing you mentioned that he swallowed is a cigarette. An entire cigarette contains about 20 milligrams of nicotine. A toxic dose for dogs is thought to be 24 mg/kg, which means he would have to swallow about 38 cigarettes to be in any dangerous situation. Unfortunately, all the things he ate can cause an upset stomach because they are not normal food items. Therefore, since nausea and vomiting are the side effects of swallowing these items, the goal of treatment is actually to try to reduce nausea and inhibit vomiting. If he vomits because of what he ate then that is the same effect as giving him hydrogen peroxide. Since he is not at risk of a toxicity from the cigarette, there is no advisable reason to give the hydrogen peroxide. So there is good news there.
