Second opinion] My sister's dog, a 6 month old chocolate lab has paralysis in his hind legs, bloated stomach (possibly full?), excessive drooling, loss of appetite, and loss of bladder. Blood tests are fine, so what could it be? The vet he's at now wants to open his stomach up, but I'm afraid it might be IVDD

I reviewed your conversation with my excellent colleague Rebecca. In retrospect, I wouldn't have allowed his being opened up as he presented as a neurologic rather than abdominal case. I'm pleased to hear that a specialist veterinary neurologist is attending to him. IVDD isn't likely. Epidural or vertebral neoplasia aren't likely at his age. Fibrovascular embolism (an interruption in the blood supply to his spinal cord) isn't likely at his age. Spinal cord inflammation (myelitis) is an important consideration as is polyradiculoneuritis - an idiopathic (unknown cause) inflammatory disorder which is probably the most common polyneuropathy in dogs. Myasthenia gravis - a neuromuscular disease is another consideration. Rarer considerations include botulism, tick paralysis, and other polyneuropathies and polymyositis. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
