Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. I'm sorry the dog has that. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name and age?

Lolabean 11.5 yrs w bronchitis for past 5 yrs - reverse sneezing prior since age 5

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Lolabean?

We have just started insulin this week. I’m afraid to use robitussin in a dog her age plus she’s already freaked out over getting insulin

I'm sorry to hear of this with Lolabean. When addressing a chronic sterile bronchitis bronchodilators, antiinflammatories (not in a diabetic unless they're delivered by a metered dose inhaler), and cough suppressants are indicated. Robitussin shouldn't be considered due to lack of efficacy and toxicity at higher doses. You'll have better antitussive action by dosing her with a teaspoon (small dog) - tablespoon (large dog) of honey every few hours.

Cough suppressants include hydrocodone, butorphanol, or diphenoxylate hydrochloride.

Bronchodilators include oral terbutaline or albuterol (beta-2 antagonists); methylxanthines such as extended-release theophylline.

Antiinflammatory corticosteroids inhaled by means of a metered dose inhaler (e.g., fluticasone) should be considered although it's important to recognize that even when inhaled fluticasone can cause systemic effects. They're not expected to be significant but her glycemic control could potentially be affected and so careful monitoring of her blood sugars is important when such a drug is inhaled.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
