Customer Question
We have a 12...

We have a 12 yr. Old 100# (not really overweight) who is having breathing problems. He is on temaril-P and Phcox Max for arthritic hind quarters, and canine renal support for elavated liver enzymes from being on the steroids for years. He also has fatty cysts in quite a few areas externally. He is eating well on Fresh Pet. is losing some control of his bowels because of his declining mobility in his hind quarters. Our vet says his heart is very strong, but lungs sound asthmatic and he is having increasing difficulty breathing. She does not feel any extreme veterinary measures would be tolerated by him because of his lungs. We certainly will let him go gracefully rather than suffer, but in the meantime are trying to keep him as comfortable as possible. Is there anything else we can do to help him breath easier? I have asthma myself so it just kills me seeing him struggle with his breathing.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name?

His name is ***** ***** his is probably half large golden lab and half Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Hobo?

He seems happy most of the time, can't run or move very fast becasue of his breathing but does go out to do his potty and Bm's but increasingly is unable to get out in time for his bm's, we believe because of his bad hind quarters.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. I'll follow up for Dr. B for you. Your response to her question didn't post in your conversation. Please tell me why X-rays haven't been performed as they're essential to understand why such a patient is dyspneic (difficult breathing) and how Hobo might be addressed.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
We did not have xrays as Hobo gets so stressed going into the vet's office, and then his breathing causes him to colapse, plus it is really hard for us to get him into our crew cab truck because of his size and our physical problems. We don't have a car. We are both almost 80. Our vet that examined him at our home felt it would be too hard on him and us too. I do understand that an xray would help in his diagnosis. The other fact I did not include is that times he does breath quite normally, it's when he gets excited, goes up the little hill where his potty area is, and even at night when he is supposedly relaxed and sleeping I can hear him laboring to breath. Since I have asthma and occasionally struggle with it, I am very sympathetic as know how scary it is when I can't get enough oxygen, Our vet said thaat since he is already on the Temaril-P for his arthritis in his hind quarters that there was not anything else she could give him. I do take some herbal and homeopathic things that help my breathing so thought there might be something like that that could help him when he is having the worst time breathing?

I understand. Regretfully, I'm a died-in-the-wool allopath. I'll opt out which will allow a naturopathic vet to enter this conversation for you.
