Customer Question
My 1 yr old...

My 1 yr old Shiba female is licking her paws. At least 1 pad on each foot has smooth pink swollen area. The areas are firm to touch (NOT cyst-like or fluid filled), same firmness as paw itself, w/no broken skin, scaling or discharge. I've tried cleaning paws after walks on grass/sidewalk/snow, w/water or witch hazel, followed by application of hydrocortisone and/or benedryl creams, No improvement. Numerous paw pics on internet look identical -- pink, roundish swellings from inside edges of paws. Thoughts? JP

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Have you looked to see if there is a wound on their foot?

No wound(s) -- it's all four feet involving at least one paw pad.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name and age?

Kachi; 1yr old Shiba Inu.

Veterinarian's Assistant: How old is Kachi?

Again, 1 year.

Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm sorry to hear that Kachi has been licking her paws. The most common cause of this is allergies. lt's good that you are washing her paws after walks because that will mechanically remove the allergens from them. Another thing I recommend doing is to try giving her some Benadryl. About how much does she weigh?

Hello. My apologies for the delay. You can try giving her 2-3 tablets of 25 mg Benadryl tablets 1-3 times per day. If that does not help, I would take her to the vet for further workup.
