She is a new pet. 8 weeks old. Lab, great pyrness, and grey hound. I am unfamiliar with normal respiratory patterns for puppies. She seems to be breathing rapidly. She has flaring near the nostrils

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What seems to be the problem with the Lab?

She is breathing pretty rapidly.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Where does the Lab seem to hurt?

No pain that is obvious

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the Lab's name?

Diamond

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Diamond?

She hasn't had her first shots yet. She also had several ticks

Hello I am Dr. Joey. Thanks for asking your question and trusting me to help you and your pet today. I am a licensed veterinarian with over 18 years of experience.

This type of pattern if observed while or after a period of excitement or activity is normal, but if this is how she is breathing all the time then this is not normal. We worry about pneumonia or heart issues at this age. If she is worsening tonight, her gums look purple/blue or she is lethargic or not eating/drinking then have her seen on emergency tonight. Otherwise you could monitor and have her seen first thing tomorrow. I am not sure I could link this to ticks, although removing those is important.

She ate fine and is drinking. She played a lot today. We removed the ticks and rinsed her with johnsons baby soap. She is breathing like that at rest. Her gums are normal. She just started breathing like that at rest. She seems to be sleeping peacefully otherwise.

Since she ate well and is resting without problem, it sounds like she is stable and fine to monitor until tomorrow. If she is still doing this tomorrow and there is an abdominal movement to each respiration as if breathing harder than normal or just rapidly at all times, then the safest thing is to have her examined. Again, our top worry is pneumonia. Puppies are highly susceptible and they get so sick should this occur. Sometimes heavy burdens of parasites can also cause respiratory problems.
