I am sorry to hear about Emma's coughing. How long has she been doing this?

Is she eating normally? Any weight loss?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

There are many reasons for a dog her age to be coughing like this. She may have an infection, and need antibiotics. She may have fluid in her lungs, or heart disease. She may have a "collapsing trachea" that has gotten worse with age. She may have bronchitis.

More rarely, she could have a parasitic infection like lungworm, or (has to be on the list at her age) cancer.

If you lift her lip to check her gums, do they look pink, not pale?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

If she were mine, I would start by listening to her lungs with a stethoscope, taking her temperature (normal rectal temp is 101.5). If I heard fluid in her lungs, I would take a chest Xray.

Emma, eats good, she's lost most of her teeth, her gums look red
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

Good she is eating well, and not losing weight.

The best place to start to find out what is causing her cough would be an exam by a veterinarian to see if she has a fever, fluid in her lungs, or just needs a course of antibiotics.

You can give her Robitussin DM (no other Robitussin) at 1/4 teaspoon as needed, but it would be best to find the underlying cause of her coughing since she is older.
